God Is Pure and Trustworthy

Start Here

Tell me about a time someone you thought you knew did something that totally surprised you.

Reading — 1 John 1:5

Read it aloud once, slowly, then pause on the last line before anyone talks.

And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

Discussion

Littles

What might be hiding inside an apple that looks perfect on the outside?

They guess a worm or a brown spot. Then: “People can be that way too — nice outside, unkind inside. God has nothing rotten in Him; He’s good to the core.”

Middles

If there’s no darkness at all in God, why is there so much darkness in the world He made?

Let them wrestle, then: “The darkness isn’t from God — it came from sin, when people turned away from Him.”

Teens

What does “no darkness in God” mean to you in your own words? If that’s the case, what does that mean when He doesn’t give you what you want?

There’s no bad in God, so His “no” is never to hurt you.

Walk It Out

Turn the lights off for a few seconds, then back on. Ask: “See how the light fills the room and leaves no dark corner? There is nothing dark in God either — no evil, nothing false, anywhere in Him.”

Prayer

God, nothing in you is dark or false — no ugly surprise waiting to come out. You see everything we try to bury, yet through Jesus you welcome us close instead of turning away. Help us stop hiding, and trust that the safest place to be fully known is right next to you.
