God Spoke, and the World Was

Start Here

What would you make happen if all you had to do was say the word?

Reading — Genesis 1:1; Psalm 33:6, 9

Read all three aloud, slowly, and pause after each one.

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Psalm 33:6

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all the stars by the breath of His mouth.

Psalm 33:9

For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.

Discussion

Littles

"Say 'apple, appear!' as loud as you can — then look at your hands."

Nothing showed up, right? But when God spoke, the world came to be — He made something real just by saying it. Only God can do that.

Middles

Listen to Psalm 33:6 again — what did God use to make the heavens and the stars?

His word — the breath of His mouth, nothing else. Then ask: when you make something, what do you have to start with? So what kind of power does it take to make something out of nothing?

Teens

Say it back in one sentence — if God made everything just by speaking, what does that tell you about His word?

After they answer, press it: where in your life right now do you most need to trust that God's word actually does what it says?

Walk It Out

Right now, have one person give a command the whole family obeys — "Everybody, hands up!" Then point out: your words only worked because people were here to obey. When God spoke, nothing existed yet — and it still came to be. (Ps. 33:9)

Prayer

Lord, by your word the heavens were made, and when you spoke, the world came to be and stood firm. Help us trust that same word when you speak to us today.
