God Made and Preserves All Things

Start Here

What keeps your heart beating right now, even when nobody’s telling it to?

Reading — Nehemiah 9:6

Read it aloud once, slowly, then give it a few seconds of quiet before anyone responds.

“You alone are the LORD. You created the heavens, the highest heavens with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to all things, and the host of heaven worships You.”

Discussion

Littles

Put your hand on your chest and feel your heartbeat — now try to make it stop, just by wanting it to.

They can’t — that’s the point. God is giving them life this very second; they aren’t the ones keeping it going.

Middles

A clock keeps ticking long after its maker walks away. Why can’t the world keep itself going the same way, without God giving it life every moment?

No single right answer — let them reason. If they stall, ask what would happen to a plant or a pet if God stopped giving life for even one second.

Teens

Say it back in one sentence — who is keeping the entire universe going right now? Then: what have you been carrying this week as if it all depends on you?

Let the one-sentence answer be theirs. Name one thing you’ve been gripping yourself, then give them room to be honest.

Walk It Out

Right now, go around the group: each person points to one living thing they can see — a person, the dog, a plant on the sill — and everyone says after each: “God is keeping that alive right now.” End with the youngest pointing at themselves.

Prayer

Lord, You alone are God, and right now You’re keeping every living thing going — our hearts, our breath, the world outside the window. The One holding the whole universe is holding us, too; help us lean on You today instead of on ourselves.
